This workshop aims to introduce companies hands-on to the technological building blocks to make a first prototype of a smart, connected product for the provision of digital services. (The working language of this workshop is English)

The revenue model of digital servitisation, in which physical products are enriched with digital services, offers product builders a range of new possibilities (e.g. follow up and remote control of the product for maintenance purposes), but also presents new challenges. In order to make possible innovations tangible, it is important to start with the development of an initial prototype early on in the development process. This helps to support and accelerate the internal decision-making process in your company regarding the creation of a new digital service.

The goal of this workshop is to give companies a hands-on introduction to the technological building blocks to create a prototype. We give an overview of a number of possible hard- and software building blocks for each of the aspects sensory, connectivity, cloud computing, data processing, etc. and we guide the participants while they work out a prototype themselves based on an existing demonstrator.

  • Brief introduction to digital servitisation: what and why?
  • The different phases in the development of a smart, connected product with linked digital services
  • Hands-on development of a digital servitisation prototype using easy-to-use technological building blocks
    • Hardware platform and sensors
    • Embedded software stack
    • Communication with the cloud
    • Cloud backend
    • Data processing and analysis
    • Dashboarding and digital services
  • Towards a proof-of-concept of your own smart, connected product

Target audience

This hands-on workshop is open to businesses which build physical products and want to explore the possibility to move on to smart, connected products with linked digital services. We focus primarily on those profiles within the company that will be closely involved in the development of a first prototype in-house or with external parties.

In the workshop we use accessible and user-friendly technological building blocks. A technical background is required to follow the workshop and some programming experience is useful (but not strictly necessary).

Please note: due to the hands-on format of this workshop, the number of seats is limited. If the number of available places is exceeded, a waiting list will be created.
